Image Manipulation Summary

  • Image editing software includes Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks, but the software bundled with your scanner may be adequate for basic functions.

  • Cropping or 'canvas size' allows you to trim your image to size without resampling.

  • Resizing allows you to scale your image with or without resampling.

  • To reduce pixel size, you must resample the image.

  • The 'levels' histogram is the best tool for adjusting tonal values of your image. It may be better to do this during the scanning if the image has high contrast.

  • The 'colour balance' control is the best tool for adjusting colour values of your image. In Photoshop, 'Variations' will show you a range of adjustment previews.

  • Use the 'unsharp mask' filter for sharpening of your image - preferably as the final adjustment.

  • All the above adjustments may be applied selectively by using selection and masking tools.

  • Text may be added in image editing programs use text in graphics thoughtfully and sparingly, it is often preferable to create text in HTML.
