ACTIVITY: Image manipulation

You will need Photoshop or other image editing program.
Use a scanned image of your own, or download one from this page (below).
Make the following adjustments:

  • Use Image>canvas size (or the 'Crop' tool & the 'Info' window) to crop the image to 300 by 200 pixels.

  • Use Image>image size to resize the image by resampling to 240 pixels largest dimension.

  • Use the Image>adjust>levels control to adjust the tonal values ­ adjust the black and white points so that there are pixels in all tonal areas.

  • Use the Image>adjust>variations control to decide if you would like to adjust the colour balance of the image.

  • Use the Filters>sharpen>unsharp mask filter to sharpen the image ­ change the settings to see how they affect the result.

  • Save the image as a PSD file, then 'Save for web'. Try different export settings to reduce the size of the image while retaining optimum quality.
