Accessibility issues - technological

Challenge:

  • Need for prerequisite technology skills, such as familiarity with computer operating system(s) and software (eg browsers, word-processors)
  • Provision of adequate technical support for hardware/software
  • Maintaining consistency of software operation in the web environment (eg cross-platform/cross-browser/multimedia performance issues)

Solutions:

  • Develop tutorial material for skills required, or link to existing online material
  • Design course structure to provide support for range of proficiency (eg provide prerequisite tutorial material in introductory material or course resources)
  • Provide standardised hardware/software where applicable, otherwise develop clear guidelines for hardware/software requirements
  • Ensure that technical issues are fully explored and tested during courseware development
  • Provide FAQ and technical support pages
  • Provide phone-in help-line with costs absorbed by provider
  • Ensure that technical software problems and inconsistencies are identified and resolved during courseware development
